Building community in the classroom, identifying learning goals, discussion about the provincial exam Elements of fiction, non-fiction, structure of short story and flash fiction, broad themes of challenge, adventure, and the human experience Structure of a memoir, reading and writing memoirs Elements of non-fiction, point of view, style, documentaries of outdoor challenges (tragedies and successes), feature articles and editorials, essay writing, presentations Read a novel with themes related to Into The Wild, write an editorial, hard news article, critical review Review poetic devices, analyze and explain meaning of selected poems, write poetry, study visual forms, examine visual devices and techniques, find examples of good visuals, combine poetry and visual arts Time set aside to address areas of concern on the exam Read and listen to rants, speeches, and debates, examine form, write and present a rant or speech, or participate in a debate |
Course Evaluation
Daily Work, Assignments, Tests and Quizzes 70%
Provincial Exam 30%
The semester will involve varying amounts of reading, research, writing, spelling and grammar practice, journaling, computer work, listening activities, class discussion, presentations, and group work. Students are expected to bring necessary supplies, including headphones for listening activities, a book, magazine, or a newspaper for silent reading, and a notebook for journaling and writing ideas.
